Memories of velvet as a young girl make me cringe slightly now I’m an adult, my sister and I in matching velvet dresses, hers was red and mine was blue, with knee-length socks and black buckled shoes.  At the time, we looked like something out of a Dickens novel, and whilst our 5yr old and 11 yr old selves looked cute, I do still get flashbacks of those dreaded dresses!

Move forward some 30 + years later and I don’t feel quite the same about velvet anymore.  Used tastefully, it can really add a textural element to your wedding day that looks elegant and sophisticated.  Delicate velvet ribbon tied around your bouquet gives a whimsical feel, the luxe feel of the fabric runner as it drapes across your reception tables oozes luxury, using velvet can be a gorgeous way of adding texture.

Don’t just feel limited to using this idea for an Autumn or Winter wedding, although I do love the deep jewel tones that work perfectly for weddings in these seasons, bright, sunny shades are perfect for a Spring or Summer day.

The boys don’t have to miss out either, incorporate velvet details for your groom by adding a velvet bow tie, or even a velvet blazer if you dare.

For a witty take on the velvet elements, how about a red velvet wedding cake?  It still incorporates the ‘velvet’ idea, without actually using the fabric.  Isn’t that clever?!

Velvet might make you think of the 80’s or 90’s but it really is a great fabric to use across different elements of your wedding day.
